What is Mind Mapping?

The information age causes an overload of media that reach us daily. Everyday we have to make decisions based on using that info. As Clay Shirky says: “it is not information overload, it is filter failure!” Tony Buzan, the originator of mind mapping, developed a note taking, memory and reading technique based on how the brain functions. Two important drivers are association and imagination. This organic and radiant way of structuring information uses hierarchy (main and subtopics along branches), colors, images, icons, relationships and links to sources. Information is noted in main and subtopics that makes it possible to filter.

The state and ROI of business events

Important before you start planning an event and determining the ROI, is to take your target group or audience into account.

Do you know what the attention span is of your audience’s brain? A TED talk has a maximum of 18 minutes. That’s the average amount of time a professional can focus on a presentation.

So, why bother to give a presentation of 60 minutes? The effectiveness rapidly declines as the audience’s attention drifts away.

An even more horrifying statistic: the average human has a shorter attention span than a goldfish!

Why we go to events?

mindmeeting-book-ebookBased on the book Into the heart of meetings, attendees go to events to:

  1. learn something
  2. network
  3. get motivated
  4. make decisions
  5. get guided
  6. be part of a tradition

How to apply knowledge?

What is the best way to apply knowledge taken from events? At (hybrid/ online) events and congresses and meetings a lot of information is orally shared.

  1. Often presenters have a slide-deck that is shared afterwards via email or LinkedIn’s Slideshare.
But how many attendees do really flip through all the slides to find that great tip/ idea?
  2. You can make notes on your tablet or smartphone.
But how many attendees really make quality notes? Or better yet, how often do you look back in your notes?
  3. But, I can see a video recording of the talk via a login on Youtube or Vimeo.
Ok, are you really going to watch the talk again; forty minutes or so?

Visualizing events by live mapping

Over the past 7 years I have been facilitating at a range of events as Live Mapper and Moderator; which has led to my live mapping service. A live mind mapper is a facilitator who makes a live mind map on screen for the audience to follow or off screen to present after the presentation. One of the most important skills of a live mind mapper is active listening. Continuously listing and structuring information into key words and hierarchically noting them down.

“I have come across Alexis van Dam, a senior live mapper facilitator. For the Digital Marketing Summit Asia 2016, Alexis has made 25 condensed digital mind maps of all the online talks. These map provide an excellent, visual and condensed overview of the 45 minutes talks. It helped the audience understand the topics discussed in the video’s since people’s attention span can unfortunately not hold 45 minutes. It is a real added value for an (online) event to harvest the knowledge and make it possible to share. It really improves the ROI of your event.”

Features Live Mapping Service on-screen vs off-screen

On-screen Live Mapping

On-screen live mapping helps the audience to follow the presentation and stick to the core points of the story. You will need at least to screens and a beamer. You can also create a live mapping stream online. On screen live mind mapping is perfect to facilitate group brainstorm sessions, strategy sessions, meetings with actions, project kick-offs and Q&A’s.

Off-screen Live Mapping

Off-screen mapping is used to note important info from a presentation or session and is shared afterwards. This ‘summary mind map‘ can be used as reference to apply knowledge into practice. A mind map is more condensed than a lengthy video or a slide deck. Often it fits on your screen or paper. It helps to quickly determine if the contents are of interest and zoom in on the slides that are particularly interesting.
